Humanity Touches the Sun
On December 24, 2024, the Parker Solar Probe made its closest approach to the Sun.
Travelling at 430,000 miles per hour (692,000 km per hour) - or more than 100 miles per second (161 km per second) - it would cover the distance from London to New York in less than 30 seconds.
The Parker Solar Probe is the fastest object ever made by humans (compare it to other fast-moving objects in the video below).
In this short film, learn how the Parker Solar Probe is helping scientists unravel the mysteries of the Sun’s corona (the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere, made of hot plasma and extending millions of kilometres into space).
For example, why is the corona so much hotter than the Sun's surface ie. about 1 million °C compared to 5,500 °C?
