Babel
Domes are found in buildings across cultures and throughout history, from ancient temples to modern government buildings. Their curved structure uses gravity and tension to create large, open spaces without needing columns for support. This makes them both practical and visually impressive architectural achievements.
The 360° video artwork Babel takes viewers on a journey through famous domed buildings around the world. Using archival footage and animation, audiences experience standing inside iconic structures like Rome's Pantheon, the U.S. Capitol Building, and the ornate Tilla Kari Madrasa in Uzbekistan.
The artwork presents these different domes stacked on top of each other like building blocks, creating an impossible tower. However, each dome spins and rotates, causing the levels to clash and replace one another in an ongoing architectural battle that spans different time periods, locations, and belief systems.
Rather than promoting one single architectural style or cultural approach, Babel celebrates how under the right conditions different traditions can work together.
