Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2016
Inaugurated during the International Year of Astronomy 2009, the Astronomy Photographer of the Year is an annual competition looking to find the most stunning and breathtaking images of galaxies, aurorae, the Moon, Sun, planets and more. Open to amateur and professional astronomy photographers alike, the competition is organised by the National Maritime Museum and sponsored by Insight Investment and the BBC's Sky at Night.
Images like these are an invaluable tool with which to inspire a love of astronomy in others. Each year the Royal Observatory Greenwich creates a short planetarium presentation to show off some of the winners and runners up from the competition.
